Modular Jamaica to spend US$5M on steel-frame hurricane resistant houses

Modular Jamaica will be pumping US$5 million into the building of steel framed hurricane resistant houses across Jamaica in the wake of the devastation of more than 100,000 housing units by Hurricane Melissa.

One of the company's model homes, which was built in Westmoreland, withstood the devastation caused by the hurricane.

CEO of Modular Jamaica William Massias says this was an unplanned stress test, which the company passed, and as a result, it will move from the demonstration phase to the build-out phase.

He also said the company can produce 1,000 steel–framed superstructures per month, while employing 50 workers initially, with the scope to increase these numbers as the demand increases.

He noted that the steel-frames will be sourced from Colombia, adding that the company is now in the process of finalising the agreement.
