New QR code scam targeting ABM customers

Some clients using Automated Banking Machines (ABMs) are being plagued with a new type of scam.

Cyber criminals are placing QR codes in machine locations, encouraging unsuspecting persons to scan to win prizes or get information on promotions.

The National Commercial Bank Jamaica (NCB) says a number of its ABMs have been defaced with these QR codes.

The bank says this is a new type of 'phishing' scam, in which criminals attempt to obtain sensitive information by posing as a trustworthy entity.

The posters placed in the machines include the NCB logo.

The flyer also claims customers can win more than $1 million in cash and prizes by clicking on the link which appears when the image is scanned.

It then prompts them to provide private banking information, such as their PIN and internet banking login details.

Dane Nicholson, head of Fraud prevention at NCB, is warning clients to be vigilant.

He says "NCB will never send unsolicited links or ask customers to share their private banking details outside of its secure banking platforms".

The bank is encouraging customers to report any suspicious activity or questionable material found inside or near ABMs.
