Police continue to warn against gun salutes

Senior Superintendent Eron Samuels, head of the St. James Police

Senior Superintendent Eron Samuels, head of the St. James Police, is warning that persons caught engaging in gun salutes will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and face a long prison term.

He reminded the public that the minimum penalty for any firearm offence is 15 years.

"We will be beseeching them not to carry out any form of gun salutes in this time. We will be out in our numbers. We will definitely be looking to impact the persons who may be doing these gun salutes and we will be going out to prosecute. If these persons so desire, they will be facing the full blunt of the law," he warned.

"We must also remember that when these projectiles are fired in the air, they come down at equal speed and may cause harm to unsuspecting members of the public," added SSP Samuels.
