Data from the Pensions Industry Association of Jamaica (PIAJ) show that pension coverage remains low among workers in several key sectors.
The association says only one per cent of agricultural workers and two per cent of workers in mining and construction were enrolled in private approved retirement schemes last year.
That compares with about half of workers in the financial and commercial sectors.
Overall, the association says only 13 per cent of the 1.3 million workers in Jamaica's private sector were enrolled in an approved retirement scheme last year.
Against this background, the association has commissioned the Don Anderson led Market Research Services, to conduct a National Savings, Retirement Preparedness and Pensioner Welfare Survey.
Association President Sanya Goffe says the survey will focus on self-employed and informal workers, as well as others whose income does not fit traditional pension arrangements.
She says it will also assess their willingness and ability to join more flexible schemes with lower contributions.
Don Anderson says fieldwork will be conducted over four months, with the findings expected in January next year.
