The People's National
Party (PNP) is calling for the removal of Head of MegaMart Gassan Azan from the
Chairmanship of Jamaica Trade and Invest, formerly Jampro.
Mr. Azan was one of several persons recently appointed by the Government to head the Boards of state-run entities.
The Party says Mr. Azan's position has been comprised by recent irregularities with the electricity supply at one of his MegaMart outlets.
Last weekend, Megamart confirmed that an employee had been suspended after the Jamaica Public Service discovered a device on its system that interrupted the recording of electricity consumption.
A statement from the Opposition Spokepersons Council says in light of the incident it is inappropriate for Mr. Azan to continue as Chairman of Jamaica Trade and Invest.
The Council called on Mr. Azan and Industry Minister Karl Samuda to respond in the best interest of the country and Jamaica Trade Invest.
When contacted Tuesday night Mr. Samuda said he would not dignify the PNP's statement with a comment.
