PriceSmart notifies customers of cybersecurity breach

US based membership wholesale chain PriceSmart has sent a notice to customers regarding a recent cybersecurity breach.

In an email, the firm said it has not yet found evidence of identity theft or fraud related to the event.

While the company has not commented on the magnitude of the issue, it's being reported that about 500 gigabytes of data on clients and employees were compromised in a ransomware attack.

PriceSmart says it is "aware a malicious actor has claimed to have taken data from its systems".

It says it has been working with leading cybersecurity experts to gather facts, while seeking to ensure its Members' data remains protected.

The company says completing its own investigation is necessary to determine the scope or nature of the incident.

PriceSmart says that if the investigation finds that sensitive information was breached, affected organizations and individuals will be contacted.
