Producer prices rise for mining and manufacturing in August

The Producer Price Index for mining and quarrying rose four-tenths of 1 per cent in August, moving from 194.1 in July to 194.9.

That increase was driven mainly by bauxite mining and alumina processing, which saw a similar rise.

Manufacturing saw an even bigger jump, up 1.2 per cent, moving from 310.9 to 314.7. That was fuelled by higher prices for food, beverages and tobacco, and a sharp 5.1 per cent increase in refined petroleum products.

But looking at the bigger picture, over the 12 months to August, the story is mixed.

Mining and quarrying prices are actually down 7.8 per cent year-on-year, while manufacturing prices are up 11.3 per cent over the same period.
