The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) says the unemployment rate rose to 12.3% in July even though thousands of new jobs were created from January to June.
According to STATIN, a survey it carried out in June shows that 152,000 people were unemployed.
It makes for an unemployment rate of 12.3%, which is up from the 11.6% it was in the similar month last year, when 164,000 people were out of a job.
But a closer look at the figures shows that about 12,000 new jobs were created since January as real estate and hotels employed more people.
But at the same time, some 25,000 fewer people were in the labour force.
Most had given up hope of ever finding a job.
In all, that pushed the number of people, who are of working age and out of the labour force to 773,000, while those who remain number 1.2 million.
