Jamaicans turned out in their numbers on Monday to show support for their respective political candidates who were nominated to contest the September 3 general election.
A total of 189 candidates were nominated across 63 constituencies.
Director of Elections Glasspole Brown says the day's exercise went fairly well.
"The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People's National Party nominated 63 candidates each. The Jamaica Progressive Party, 47, the United Independents' Congress (UIC) nominated seven and there were nine independent candidates," Mr. Brown outlined.
Meanwhile, the Director of Elections said the JLP and the PNP each fielded three candidates for local government by-elections in three divisions. Mr. Brown explained that no nominations were taken in the Seiveright Gardens division.
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness and Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie announced September 3 by-elections in the Chancery Hall, Olympic Gardens, Seiveright Gardens and Denham Town divisions of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation.
But Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby had argued that the proper procedure for scheduling the by-election for the Seiveright Gardens division was not followed. He said the PNP was prepared to go to court over the matter.
