The Ministry of Industry, Investment & Commerce is reporting that 196 licences have now been issued by the Cannabis Licensing Authority.
State Minister in the Ministry Delano Seiveright says the licenses span cultivation, processing, retail, transport and research, with a growing pipeline of applicants at various stages of approval, "and that signals growing confidence in Jamaica's regulatory framework."
He described Jamaica's approach as one that is deliberately aimed at building "a legitimate industry that can support MSMEs, create jobs and, ultimately, scale exports."
There are now "positive signs" of progress in that direction, he added, citing the case of one company that recently exported a small quantity of medicinal cannabis to Cayman.
Mr Seiveright told Radio Jamaica News that the country's regulated cannabis industry is steadily maturing, citing stronger regulation, improving operational efficiency and emerging export prospects.
He said said the government is following emerging international policy issues on the cannabis industry, citing recent "positive signals" from the Trump administration on cannabis reformat the federal level, "and that would certainly gradually ease global barriers and improve cross border collaboration."
