199 new COVID-19 cases

Jamaica's COVID-19 positivity rate increased to 21.2 per cent on Friday after 199 more cases of the virus were confirmed.

The confirmations came from 1,575 samples.

The parish of St. Ann accounted for the largest number of new infections with 49, followed by the Corporate Area (Kingston & St. Andrew) with 37, and St. Catherine, 30.

There have now been 45,777 infections since the first case was confirmed in Jamaica on March 10 last year.

Of that number, 23,505 are active cases.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness also reported one new death from the virus, a 74 year-old man from the Corporate Area.

Six more deaths are under investigation.

So far 779 people have died from the respiratory illness.

There are 204 patients being treated for the virus in hospitals. Twenty-two are critically ill.
