Bahamian Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis has confirmed that five persons were killed on Great Abaco Island during the passage of Hurricane Dorian.
Dorian is the most powerful storm to hit the Bahamas since records began.
Dr. Minnis, who was speaking during a news conference Monday afternoon, described the devastation in Abaco as unprecedented, extensive, and deeply worrying.
"The images and videos we are seeing are heartbreaking. Many homes, businesses, and other buildings have been completely or partially destroyed. There is an extraordinary amount of flooding and damage to infrastructure," he reported.
He said the US Coast Guard has rescued several injured persons.
Fake reports
Dr. Minnis also noted that there are fake reports circulating on social media about affected areas in the Bahamas.
He appealed to persons spreading fake news to desist as those messages "can be very damaging, both to individuals and to our nation."
According to the International Red Cross, 13,000 houses are feared damaged or destroyed.
Extensive flooding
A resident of Grand Bahama, Chris Strachan, said there is extensive flooding in sections of Grand Bahama including the airport.
He said the island is without electricity and several buildings have been damaged.
He was speaking Monday on the Morning Agenda programme on Power 106.
