The Senate yesterday passed the Information and Communications Technology Authority Act, which seeks to improve the use of technology across government ministries.
The aim is to improve the delivery of services across government entities, and increase efficiency and productivity in the public service.
The Bill was originally piloted by Technology Minister Fayval Williams, as part of an effort to improve ICT service management in the public sector, and push the digital agenda.
It will establish an ICT Authority, which will take over the functions of e-gov Jamaica and the office of the Chief Information Officer. The Authority is to be headed by a nine member board.
It was the composition of this board which formed the basis of the only amendment to the Bill.
Opposition Senator Floyd Morris made a request for provisions to be made for a disabled person to be on the board - the request was eventually accepted.
