The Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) is reporting a near 50 per cent reduction in the number of nurses leaving the island for overseas jobs.
NAJ President Carmen Johnson said a little more than 100 nurses have migrated since the Association's conference year, which started last October.
This was down from 200 in the previous year.
Ms Johnson said the reasons for the reduction include a change in the immigration rules of the Unites States, which delayed the approval process of some applicants, and the a seeming slump in the number of nurses being requested by the United Kingdom.
However, the NAJ president noted that the UK market had reopened so the number of nurses leaving was expected to go up by the end of the current conference year.
This, she said, would continue to pose a strain on the Jamaican health sector.
