Less than a year after shops at the Old Shoes Market in Montego Bay, St. James were gutted by fire, vendors are again picking up the pieces following another fire at the facility.
One of the affected vendors who spoke with Radio Jamaica News expressed distress, lamenting the condition of the market even before the fire.
"If yuh nah work a call centre and yuh nah drive nuh taxi, nobody don't business wid yuh. When you is a higgler is like yuh on your own, and is a honest job you a do because we nah rob nobody, we nah kill nobody...so we still play a role like anyone else. So all we a seh, give us some respect and treat us like people, bredrin," bemoaned Dave, who said he was unsure of his next move now that he has lost his goods.
Mayor of Montego Bay Richard Vernon said the damage is significant.
"When we looked at the situation, we realised that one shop had about five large refrigerators and an AC unit operating in that particular section of the shop. And I was also advised that the person operated it as a storage area for many persons who ply their wares along the street," he noted.
Firefighters say based on investigations, electrical breaches caused the blaze which started about 12 o'clock Wednesday morning.
