The government of Antigua & Barbuda will be making a case at the upcoming meeting of COP for the 'Loss and Damage Fund' to be put into immediate effect in light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl to multiple Caribbean countries.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the damage caused by the hurricane underscores that climate change poses an existential threat to countries such as the Small Island Developing States of the Caribbean.
He charged that he will be making recommendations for all SIDS to set up a Disaster Contingency Fund to be capitalised by proceeds of the Loss and Damage Fund to be replenished over time.
Prime Minister Browne suggests that there should be compensatory mechanisms within the Fund to assist countries, such as those affected by the hurricane, to recover.
