At least 12 dead after boat carrying migrants capsizes in English Channel

At least 12 people have died after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the French coast in the English Channel.

According to the French coastguard, more than 50 people have been rescued in the incident, with many receiving treatment in Boulogne-sur-Mer.

It is the deadliest disaster this year in the Channel, the world's busiest shipping lane.

UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the news was "horrifying" - and that work to crack down on people smuggling gangs "must proceed apace"

More than 20,000 people have made the crossing from France to the UK so far this year.
