It will be another 18 to 24 months before Jamaicans begin using the new 658 area code.
Jamaica currently uses the 876 area code.
Ten digit dialling is being introduced at the end of the month to facilitate implementation of the additional area code.
However, Elizabeth Bennett Marsh, Public Education Specialist at the Office of Utilities Regulation, says numbers using the new area code will not be issued immediately.
"As of now, there is no shortage of numbers. The OUR in doing its forecasting anticipates that we will need additional numbers in the next two years or so, hence, the reason we have put plans in place. The plans include an additional area code, so we will have two area codes, 876 and 658 and this will see the introduction of ten digit dialing," she declared.
Currently, most Jamaicans use seven digits when dialing local numbers.
After May 31, they will have to place the country's area code before those seven digits.
