Attack on Delapenha Funeral home not linked cemetery controversy - Police

The police hierarchy in Montego Bay St. James said there is nothing to support rumours being bandied about that last week's attack on workers of the Delapenha Funeral home was connected to the controversial Royal Rest Cemetery.

Two workers were fatally shot and a workshop and vehicles set ablaze leaving some $20 million in property damage following an attack by armed thugs last Friday.

Superintendent in charge of St. James Steve McGregor told RJR news that a motive has still not been established.

He noted that several interviews have, however, been conducted and the police are pursuing some leads.

About 6:30 last Friday, a group of workers was at the Delapenha garage and workshop on Albion Road when several men armed with guns walked up to them and opened fire.

Two workers were shot and the attackers then reportedly set fire to the facility before escaping.

The two men died on the spot while three vehicles including a hearse were gutted.

Another hearse and sections of the building were partially burnt.

Following the shooting, residents claimed that it was connected to the controversial Royal Rest Cemetery in Burnt Ground Hanover which is owned by Delapenha's.

Several demonstrations have been mounted at the facility by residents opposed to its operation.

Residents have reportedly been attacked and one woman allegedly raped following one of the demonstrations.
