The Bahamian government on Thursday announced a total lockdown of Bimini, the closest Bahamian island to the United States, in order to slow and control community spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said his government implemented the two-week lockdown after consultation with health and other officials.
The lockdown will begin on Monday.
Dr. Minnis said Bimini has been classified as a COVID-19 hotspot by health officials.
He said the first COVID-19-related death was recorded on Bimini and to date, health officials have confirmed 13 cases of the virus.
