A local medical testing facility has confirmed that thousands of private files and data of hundreds of patients have been accessed in a breach of its systems in November last year.
Biomedical Caledonia Medical Laboratory says the investigation, to date, has revealed that the incident resulted from the unauthorised access of its network and systems though an external vendor.
Biomedical Caledonia says it is still investigating the extent of the breach and has been informing its stakeholders including doctors and patients.
The medical facility says at the time the breach was discovered, it immediately took the necessary steps to prevent further unauthorised access and hired a certified cyber security and forensic investigator and a team of cyber security specialists to address the issue.
Additionally, all the relevant government and law-enforcing stakeholders were promptly advised.
The laboratory says it is doing everything possible to protect the data of patients and maintain the trust placed in it.
Biomedical Caledonia says it has selected a new managed services provider, implemented enhanced security measures, upgraded its entire IT infrastructure, deployed a Security Information and Event Management system as well as installed Intrusion Detection Systems among other actions.
It says it has revised the protocols for vendor relationships and bolstered internal security policies.
These measures it says have strengthened its security posture.
