British parliamentarian Dawn Butler is furious over the
forced removal of a black boy from a Catholic
School in England because of his
Afro-Caribbean hair style.
Miss Butler, who is of Jamaican descent, told RJR News the 'managed removal' of the year seven student from St. Gregory's Catholic Science College in North London is discriminatory against Afro-Caribbean children.
She says a policy change is needed as the school is funded from the public purse.
She said all nationalities should have equal opportunity to attend any educational institution in modern Britain and the matter is to be taken up at the highest level.
Our London correspondent is reporting that the child, who is of Caribbean descent, was accepted at St. Gregory's Catholic Science College in North London for the academic year 2009-10.
It is reported that after the initiation period at least three staff members at the school said the child would have to go home because of his cornrow hairstyle.
The child's mother was further informed that the boy had to shave his head in order to be accepted in the school.
The parent was also told that the chemicals and creams used to maintain the hair could become flammable in science classes.
The child has since been accepted into another secondary level educational institution without any adjustment to his hairstyle.
