Black smoke signals no pope elected in first conclave vote

Black smoke has been seen coming from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, meaning a new pope has not been elected.

The cardinals gathered in the Vatican, where they will continue the process on Thursday to elect a new head of the Catholic Church.

Before the chapel doors shut earlier, the cardinals took a oath in which they promised to keep secret all matters related to the vote.

They are allowed no communication with the outside world until a new pope is elected.
