Electioneering for the parliamentary opposition in Portland Eastern has gained momentum with newly appointed People's National Party candidate, Isat Buchanan, meeting prospective voters on Wednesday.

The political neophyte says he is overwhelmed by the support he has received from constituents, adding that the decision to seek election in the Portland Eastern constituency was not difficult.

Mr. Buchanan, who is also an attorney-at-law, hopes to unseat the Jamaica Labour Party's Ann-Marie Vaz in the general election, constitutional due by September 2025.

Mrs. Vaz, alongside her husband Daryl, who is Member of Parliament for Portland Western, have anchored the parish in the win column for the governing party.

Mr. Buchanan is, however, confident that the seat will swing in favour of the PNP.

"I was called by the people. In terms of representation, they will not get disappointed. They will expect somebody who will show up. They will expect somebody who will act. They will expect somebody who will listen and they will expect somebody who will elevate. That is what I represent - rehabilitation, elevation, and the possibilities are endless. I'm always confident. I drown out the noise and I do... so I don't just speak," he maintained.

The opposition confirmed Mr. Buchanan as the party's standard bearer on Monday.

Mr. Buchanan replaces Colin Bell who resigned last month amid what he said was a lack of support.

The PNP said it now has all 63 representatives in place heading into the next general election.
