Bush fires still blazing in East Rural St. Andrew

The Jamaica Fire Brigade will undertake a different method to fighting the bush fires, which have been raging in sections of East Rural St. Andrew.

Divisional Head of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Superintendent Sean Martin, says on Sunday, firefighters and soldiers conducted an aerial assessment of the communities affected by the fires, which highlighted challenges in the fire-fighting efforts.

Following a subsequent meeting with disaster preparedness officials a new strategy will be employed on Monday to tackle the blaze.

“Through ODPEM and the fire department we have acquired some personal backpacks which hold five gallons of water, so we are now equipping the team with those so that when they go in they will portable water with them…” said Martin.

Meanwhile, concerns of  another nature have surfaced.

He said fire personnel observed two major fire spots in  the communities of Craighall and Limehall. These fires could trigger landslides.

“The flyover shows that a lot of the land is very bare. If we have rain, there could be lots of land slippage.”

He said this could lead to a major disaster.
