By-election to be held in St. Ann North East on September 30

A parliamentary by-election will be held in the constituency of St. Ann North East on September 30, to fill the vacancy created by Tuesday's resignation of incumbent MP Marsha Smith.

Nomination Day is September 11.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness made the announcement at the weekly Post-Cabinet Press Briefing on Wednesday morning.

Matthew Samuda is se to be the governing Jamaica Labour Party's candidate in the election.

Mr Samuda has tendered his resignation from the Senate and as a member of the Cabinet, as he prepares for his run for the vacant seat in the House of Representatives.

Why only one by-election?

With the imminent resignation of Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke from his St. Andrew North West seat in Parliament to take up a position with the International Monetary Fund at the end of this month, there will be three vacant parliamentary seats (the third being Trelawny South, vacated a year ago by Marisa Dalrymple Phillibert).

There are also two Local Government seats vacant - one in the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation and the other in Clarendon, both due to the death of the incumbent.

The Prime Minister was therefore asked why only one by-election will be held this month.

"North East St. Ann is not singled out," he declared.

Elaborating, he said "we are now at a stage where we are ready to do all the by-elections and all of them will be done... within months."

The next general (parliamentary) elections are constitutionally due by September, 2025.
