CAL/Fly Jamaica denied permission for direct NY flights

Amid objections from the Air Line Pilots Association and Airlines for America the US Department of  Transportation has denied applications by Caribbean Airlines and Fly Jamaica to have direct flights from Georgetown, Guyana to New York.
A report in Guyana's Stabroek newspaper said the Department's response was issued on Monday.
Fly Jamaica and CAL had presented letters with their applications saying they had been granted flag carrier status by the Guyanese Government.

According to the ruling, the Department of  Transportation said in considering foreign air carrier requests it weighed various criteria as well as any other factors that are germane.

Following the applications by the two airlines in July, Air Line Pilots Association and Airlines for America filed objections, asserting that the requests by Fly Jamaica and CAL were extra-bilateral, and the Department should deny the applications.

The pilots' group also said CALs operations were being subsidised by the government of  Trinidad and Tobago.
