The Office of the Children’s Advocate (OCA) is expressing concern about what it says are reports in the media and anecdotal incidents of sexual activity in schools.
The OCA notes that the reported sexual activity not only spans heterosexual engagements, but also homosexual encounters.
The concern follows a Gleaner article last week which highlighted that younger students were under siege at a Corporate Area all-girls school.
The OCA says the matter is of grave concern as homosexuality has serious implications.
Meanwhile, the agency has also pointed to what it says is anecdotal mention of the occurrence of homosexual activity in some all-boys institutions.
The OCA says such sexual behaviour exposes children to serious implications of which they may not be aware.
Children’s Advocate, Diahann Gordon Harrison, wants a public education campaign to sensitise students about the risks.
The OCA is also recommending an open discussion about sexual activity in schools by all stakeholders, and for some form of policy imperative to follow.
