Captain of "ganja boat" fined $2M

Richard Lindo, the boat captain, who was arrested last year off the coast of Manchester with a large quantity of ganja, was on Wednesday fined more than $2 million when he appeared in the Manchester Parish Court.

His co-accused, Lloyd Bennett and Kayega James, absconded bail.

Lindo and his two co-accused were arrested and charged on September 21 after their vessel was intercepted by the JDF Coast Guard. Ganja weighing 1,680 lbs was seized in 38 knitted bags.

Lindo pleaded guilty on September 22 this year to possession of, dealing in and trafficking ganja.

He was fined one million dollars or two years imprisonment for dealing in ganja, one million or two years for trafficking ganja and $15,000 or six months for possession of ganja.

Additionally, the surety for Mr Bennett was taken into custody.

Bennett had previously pleaded guilty and should have appeared Wednesday for sentencing but his attorney informed the court that he had left the island and is in custody in the Cayman Islands.

The surety was offered bail in the sum of $500,000 and is to return to court on December 9.
