Chicken pox outbreak in police lock-up

There is an outbreak of Chicken Pox at the Spanish Town Police lock up in St. Catherine.

On Tuesday, the St. Catherine Health Department dispatched a team to the lock up to prescribe medication to several prisoners who have been affected.

The RJR News Centre understands that the outbreak which became evident last Thursday has resulted in over 15 prisoners being infected with chicken pox.

Information reaching our news centre is that the prisoners were being treated with a lotion provided by relatives.

However the lotion only temporarily eased the itching, prompting prison officials to seek help from the Health Department.

Chickenpox is caused by a virus called Varicella Zoster.

People who get the virus often develop a rash that looks like blisters all over their bodies.

The blisters are small and sit on an area of red skin that can be anywhere from the size of a pencil eraser to the size of a coin.
