China, which has pumped billions of dollars in investments in Jamaica, is set to forge closer ties with the island. This follows a meeting on Sunday with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller in Trinidad.
The Chinese leader suggested that the two countries improve co-operation in infrastructure, agriculture, telecommunications and mining. Recalling his visit to Jamaica four years ago, President Xi said he was deeply impressed with the Jamaican people's passion for the Chinese culture. He added that the Chinese people are also familiar with Jamaica's athletes, and the two countries should improve exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, sports and tourism.
Prime Minister Simpson Miller said Jamaica is ready to strengthen economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges with China, as well as conduct communication and mutual learning on sports and environmental protection.
Trinidad and Tobago is the first leg of President Xi's ongoing Latin American tour, which will also take him to Costa Rica and Mexico.
