Concerns have been raised about vending activity in a section of the downtown Kingston market district following traffic changes.

The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation instituted a number of temporary traffic changes, that took effect Monday ahead of the anticipated busy Christmas season, which impacted the areas where vendors can ply their wares.

Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby toured the affected thoroughfares to witness firsthand the flow of traffic and the vending activity.

Some motorists were left confused as they were not aware of the changes which resulted in congestion.

Mayor Swaby said the kinks that were identified with vending will be given immediate attention.

"Overall they are compliant. I am impressed with Heywood Street. I am not impressed with Beckford Street. We have had countless consultation on this matter and we have agreed to certain standards, and some vendors are not holding up to those stardards," he complained.

He said the vendors will get until Wednesday to comply or the police may be forced to "just clear the road".

Superintendent Beresford Williams, head of the Kingston Central Police, said a review is to be undertaken of the one-way system implemented in the downtown Kingston market district.

Superintendent Williams said the police have identified a number of areas that need revisiting.

"We have some work to do with some of the vendors who are operating contrary to some of the agreements we have. So even now as we speak, members of my team are moving around to kind of address those situations so that the free flow of traffic that we have been enjoying can continue for the other days," he said.

He was speaking while on a tour of the Kingston market district on Monday.
