Prime Minister Andrew Holness has admitted that the $17 million price tag for the 'Welcome to Montego Bay' sign project in St. James is high, however, he says the project will provide value for Jamaica.
"We want to make the sign iconic. When tourist come in, we want them to stop and run and go take selfie at the sign...As much as you believe that that might be a waste of resources, when that sign is circulated all over the world, you can't pay for that advertising," said the Prime Minister.
He however welcomed Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett's decision to call for a review of the costs associated with the building of the sign, noting that it is important to ensure the cost is in keeping with industry prices.
Mr. Holness said other countries have taken similar steps with regards to signage.
He was speaking Thursday night at a townhall meeting in Montego Bay, St. James.
