Financial commentator Dennis Chung has warned that the high level of crime and violence in Jamaica could have a recessionary impact on the country's economy.
Chung, in an interview Sunday with Radio Jamaica News, said crime costs Jamaica four per cent of its GDP or $100 billion, and he's predicting that this could inch up further if crime continues to spiral out of control.
He said there was a decline in business activities in Spanish Town, St. Catherine due to deadly gun violence.
Furthermore, with economists predicting more financial hardship globally, Chung said he was increasingly worried about the impact of crime on the Jamaican economy.
He's urging the government to create an orderly society, if it is to effectively tackle the country's crime problem in the long term.
