The Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) have been pushed backed by three weeks.

The exams will now start on May 23.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) media briefing.

Up to last week, the CXC had seemed intent on forging ahead with its initial May 2 start date, despite calls for a postponement due to the unpreparedness of students.

On Wednesday, the examination body relented. During a news conference, CXC Registrar Dr. Wayne Wesley said a special meeting of the Council earlier that morning reconsidered the date given the challenges faced by students as a result of  the COVID-19 pandemic.

An extension for submission of School Based Assessments (SBAs) has also been granted for both CSEC and CAPE students.

Additionally, Dr. Wesley said broad topics will be released to students within the next two weeks.

The exam results are projected to be released either in late August or early September.

According to Dr. Wesley, the examinations council is aiming for the soonest possible release, but he admitted the results could come later than projected.

"The aim [is] to keep this as close as possible to what the original date is, but one would appreciate that if there is a delay [in exams], there's likely to be a delay in when the results are in," he said.

The CXC is brainstorming mechanisms to deal with similar situations in the future where postponements are requested.

Dr. Wesley said this could include the provision of an alternative and comparable paper to allow additional sittings close to the original date of the exams.

"So the policy is going to look at examination structure, the processes for the delivery of examinations and how CXC would be able to respond to the varying needs across the region at the same time," he asserted.
