D-Day for Vybz Kartel and co-accused

By Halshane Burke

All eyes will be on the Court of Appeal on Wednesday afternoon as it prepares to hand down its consequential decision that will determine the fate of dancehall artiste, Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer and his co-accused.

The men petitioned the court outlining the case for their liberty after the UK based Privy Council quashed their convictions for the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams and sent the matter back to the local courts to determine if a retrial should be ordered.

Despite their convictions being overturned in March, the men have remained in custody.

Vybz Kartel, Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St. John had been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014 for the 2011 murder of Williams.

The attorneys for the men argued that their continued detention was a breach of their constitutional rights.

They also argued that the men would not get a fair trial due to the publicity surrounding the case.

But this has been dismissed by the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions which contended that the necessary safeguards were in place for the men to get a fair trial.

The Appeal Court's decision is scheduled to be handed down at 2 p.m.

Attorney-at-law Bert Samuels, whose law firm previously represented Shawn Campbell in the case, has said the men's case has strong constitutional underpinnings for the court to rule in their favour.
