Detectives are preparing to question former Member of Parliament Jolyan Silvera in connection with the murder of his wife, Melissa.

Mr. Silvera remains in police custody.

He was picked up Thursday afternoon by detectives attached to the Major Investigation Division.

Attorney Peter Champagnie says Mr. Silvera is maintaining his innocence.

"I have to respect the process in terms of my own client's position. It would be very, very irresponsible to go into any details. And one has to be professional at all times. And so that is the extent of what I would wish to say," he told TVJ reporter Kirk Wright Thursday evening.

Asked what mood his client was in, the attorney was only willing to saying that Mr. Silvera was "maintaining his innocence, and we will see what happens in the process".

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of crime, Fitz Bailey, said Mr. Silvera was taken into custody following consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It was initially reported that Mrs. Silvera died in her sleep on November 10.

But a post mortem later revealed the presence of bullet fragments in her body.

The police then opened a murder investigation into the matter.
