Public sector medical consultants restive

There are fears of major disruptions to the country's health sector in the coming weeks after medical consultants in the public service issued an ultimatum on the government over the non-payment of retroactive salaries.

The ultimatum was issued on Sunday following an emergency meeting of the senior doctors.

In a statement, the Association of Government Medical Consultants said its members are restive over unpaid retroactive salaries from the new Compensation Review programme.

According to the Association, all other public sector groups, including parliamentarians, received their retroactive pay within two months of their new salaries scales becoming effective.

The Medical Consultants say they view this as unfair and unjust, and are accusing the government of victimizing consultants working within the government system.

The Association of Government Medical Consultants says a firm request has been sent to the Ministry of Finance and The Public Service to ensure their retroactive salary payments are made within this fiscal year, and no later than March 2025.
