Digicel shuts down Loop News, to close SportsMax in August

Christopher Scott reports

Two major players in local media will soon be shuttered, following a decision by their parent company to pull the plug on operations.

Radio Jamaica News has learned that operations at Loop News have come to an immediate halt, while SportsMax TV will wind up operations by August 8.

Employees were made aware of the decision on Tuesday.

Parent company Digicel says over the last several months, it has continued to strengthen its business offering, integrating capabilities across ICT services, cyber, cloud, digital media compliance and more.

With the full integration of Symptai and an expanding portfolio of enterprise-grade services, it is positioning to deliver more value across the region.

Digicel says it is against that backdrop that it is making a strategic shift in its media operations. But it says the fan-favourite sports content that Caribbean viewers know and love will be available on other sports channels.

Trend Media will continue to operate under Digicel Business.

The decision closes an 11-year journey with Loop News.

The telecommunications company acquired full ownership of the regional sports broadcaster SportsMax and North American broadcaster CEEN TV in 2014.
