Displaced Parottee residents appeal for help after Hurricane Melissa

Residents of Parottee, St. Elizabeth

Shelter dwellers at the Barbary Hall Community Centre in St. Elizabeth are appealing for assistance amid what they say is a limited supply of food, particularly cooked meals.

The residents, who have been displaced from the community of Parottee, were relocated from the Newell High School to facilitate the reopening of school roughly two weeks ago.

Parottee resident, Levy Daley says ever since, their main cuisine has consisted of dry goods, outside of meals from the World Central Kitchen and occasionally from the shelter.

"From up a Newell, we was getting food. But since we come here, we nah get no food again. Two time we get it dung suh and Friday evening again we get it dung a di World Kitchen. So, from dat we nuh get no more food. Dem did carry a stove come leave gi wi, but dem nuh carry no cylinder, no pot nor nothing. It deh now bout two week and all now no cylinder, no pot.  Me have some dry goods, a di dry goods mi eat," he disclosed.

The residents are appealing for assistance to also rebuild their homes and communities.

Another resident, Austin Martin, said the sea located nearby Parottee has covered sections of the community and caused catastrophic damage to infrastructure.

"Everything is shed weh, from the house, bed, up to the land just gone, so we have nowhere to go. Everyone a wi dung pon di Parottee area deh pon one sad state right now because most a wi nuh have noweh fi turn back to, unless di land dump up. And wi no have di affordance fi dump it up, so wi nuh know if we going to get a likkle help fi dump it up from di government or whosoever. So we have a hard time down deh right now man," Mr. Martin lamented.

When contacted, Disaster Coordinator for St. Elizabeth Rasha Lloyd explained that a breakdown in communication from those with direct responsibility for the facility has resulted in shortened supply of water and other resources.

She said 22 shelters remain open across the parish, housing some 161 dwellers.
