Douglas Leys to be appointed the new Solicitor General

RJR News understands that Deputy Solicitor General Douglas Leys is to be appointed the new Solicitor General.

Sources say Mr. Leys has been given the nod for the job which has been the source of controversy for several months.

Mr. Leys was the sole applicant for the position which has been vacant since Solicitor General Michael Hylton stepped down last year.

Although the Public Service Commission (PSC) has been advertising the post since January, Mr. Leys was the only person who showed an interest.

He is now on secondment to the Caribbean Development Bank in Barbados.

Thursday, news came that one of the other Deputies and the man at the centre of the row between Prime Minister Bruce Golding and former members of the PSC, Dr. Stephen Vasciannie, is stepping down at the end of the month.

Our sources tell us that Dr. Vasciannie did not seek to renew his contract which expires at the end of the month.

But it is understood that the government had no intention of offering Dr. Vasciannie a new contract.

A bitter dispute erupted between Prime Minister Golding and the former PSC over the Commission's insistence that Dr. Vasciannie be recommended for the post of Solicitor General.

This led to the Prime Minister instructing the Governor General to fire them for alleged misconduct.

The Opposition People's National Party later filed an action in court claiming that the Prime Minister was in breach of the constitution.

A new PSC was appointed this year.

News also came Thursday that the third Deputy Solicitor General Patrick Foster, who had been acting in the senior position, had tendered his resignation and would be leaving on June 26.
