Early morning fire in Standpipe leaves more than 20 homeless

At least 20 children have been left homeless following an early morning fire in Standpipe, St. Andrew.
 
It's understood that the fire began about 2:30 a.m. in the tenement dwelling.
 
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
 
Radio Jamaica News understands that eight houses and three businesses were destroyed in the blaze.
 
While some residents were able to save appliances and clothing, others like Dominique Beharie lost all personal belongings. 
 
"Mi stand up inna di house and mi boyfriend say to me 'Dominique weh yah do?' Him hol' on pon mi hand and him drag mi out a di fire. Mi nuh save nut'n. Mi did have a shop; mi lose everything. Mi lose mi shop, mi source of living. Mi lose everything but mi have life," said the distraught woman. 
 
Fire units from the York Park, Half Way Tree and Trench Town fire stations responded to the blaze.
 
The cost of the damage is not known.
