The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) has rejected claims made by Citizens Action for Free & Fair Elections (CAFFE) that at 21 per cent of polling stations, voters were turned away despite being in line at the 5:00 p.m. close of polls for the September 3 general election.
According to the ECJ, this assertion is "false" and undermines both the integrity of the election results and the Commission's reputation.
It said CAFFE has failed to provide proof of its claim, and as such it should make "a complete withdrawal of the statement that was placed in the public domain".
The ECJ provided no hard evidence for its own assertion, only saying there had been no such report by officials of the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ), political parties, or accredited international observers.
The Commission, in its statement, reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free and fair elections.
