Elephant Man’s house raided

Staying true to their word to go after tax dodgers, officials from the Tax Administration Department on Tuesday raided the Upper St. Andrew apartment of popular dancehall artiste, Elephant Man.

Members of the Special Enforcement Team seized a convertible Mercedes Benz motor car owned by the international artiste, whose real name is O'Neil Bryan.

Elephant Man declined to comment when our news team arrived on the scene on Hope Road.

It is understood that Elephant Man owes the Tax Department more than $10 million, in outstanding taxes.

In March, the DJ was barred from leaving the island after the Tax Department took out a stop order on him.

Sources told RJR News that the artiste paid over $3 million in March however; he reportedly failed to pay over the balance of the tax debt which led to Tuesday's operation.

Elephant Man's attorneys rushed to the scene on Tuesday morning, and are now negotiating with tax officials.

Meanwhile, Director of Communications at the Tax Administration Department, Meris Haughton, says the raid on Elephant Man's apartment, is a clear warning to those who continue to evade the tax net.

She said assets seized by the tax department are normally liquidated to recover the debt.

She said since the crackdown on delinquent tax payers began, this year, the government has seen a steady stream of revenue into its coffers.

“For the first quarter of the year we actually met the revenue target that was given to us, we are at 100.1% of the target so we are actually over the target. A number of methods and strategies have been used in the operations of the special enforcement team that allow us to meet our targets,” Ms. Haughton said.
