Eleven students of the Edwin Allen High School in Frankfield, Clarendon are in hospital following a motor vehicle collision on Wednesday.

Two of the students are said to be in critical condition.

The driver of the taxi that was transporting them has been warned for prosecution.

It is reported that shortly after 7 o'clock, the eleven students were travelling in a seven seater Toyota Wish which collided with another taxi on a bridge in the community of Grantom in Frankfield.

The Toyota Wish overturned into the Rock River.

Simone Smith, a witness, said she was about to send her children off to school when she saw the vehicle tilt to the left then fall into the river.

Another resident, Roy Gayle, said he ran to the scene and rescued the injured students and the driver.

He blasted the authorities for not erecting guard rails on the bridge.

Everton Walters, Principal of Edwin Allen High School, told RJR News that nine of the students have been admitted at Percy Junor Hospital while the two in critical condition were sent to Kingston Public Hospital. He said one student will be sent to do a CT scan after suffering a broken arm and sustaining a hip injury.

The principal has appealed for a proper transportation system for students, noting that "it is not right to have 12 persons in one car."

Mr. Walters said in some cases, students are late for school because of the inadequate number of public passenger vehicles and the lack of larger buses to transport them.

He urged the Ministry of Education and the private sector to assist schools "in coming up with a proper transportation system."
