Glasspole Brown
Director of Elections Glasspole Brown says now that the date for the local government election has been announced, the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) will ramp up preparation activities.
The local government election will be held on February 26, with nomination day set for February 8.
The announcement was made by Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie at a meeting held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James on Thursday.
Reacting to the announcement, Mr. Brown told Radio Jamaica News that the EOJ's preparation, having started weeks ago, is advanced.
"We are at a pace that we'd want to be at this stage. There are other activities that will be ramped up in terms of now that we know the nomination day. So we should be ready for the 26th of February," he said.
He added that the EOJ has also intensified its recruitment of election day workers after receiving the required funding of $1.7 billion from the government.
"The recruitment is going fairly well. We are seeking to recruit in excess of 30,000 persons to assist us on the day of the election. Those include presiding officers, poll clerks, logistics supervisors and one-day policemen.... We are fairly close to completing our recruitment. We just have a few gaps to be filled, which hopefully will be filled by this weekend."
