Operators of shops and convenience stores are coming under fire from members of the public, for the exorbitant hike in the price of Panadol - a popular brand of paracetamol, used to treat symptoms of the Chikungunya virus.
RJR News received calls from members of the public who say over the past week, several establishments have marked up the price of the product, some as high at 120-percent.
It's reported that prior to the increase in Chick V cases, a strip of Panadol was being sold for an average J$40.
Communications Specialist at the Consumer Affairs Commission, Dorothy Campbell, says the agency has received complaints about the price movement.
The CAC is urging the public to assist with the probe to identify those engaged in price gouging.
Pharmaceutical Society concerned
Executive member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica, Dr. Norman Dunn, is also concerned about the price hike.
"Well if that is happening , if people are trying to profit from an illness, nobody could support that. From all checks that I have made among our members, we have not seen any case where people have sought to capitalise on any particular outbreak."
He has called on the public to look to other options in treating Chikungunya .
