Expect shortage of several crops for Christmas, says former JAS President

The supply of vegetables could be limited this Christmas period due to damage to crops during Tropical Storm Rafael.

According to Lenworth Fulton, immediate past president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, the storm came at a time when farmers were recovering from the effects of Hurricane Beryl.

Now, he says, the excess rainfall over recent weeks has affected several crops, including vegetables.

Mr Fulton told Radio Jamaica News that sorrel and gungo peas, which are usually ready for Christmas, have taken a battering.

The production of  cabbage, cauliflower and Irish Potatoes have also been adversely affected by excess rainfall, Mr Fulton said.
