Experts wary of lengthy prison terms for children

Clinical psychiatrist Dr Geoffrey Walcott and attorney-at-law Nicole Gordon, both speaking Sunday on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap

Clinical Psychiatrist Dr Geoffery Walcott is cautioning against draconian measures targeting juvenile offenders, including long mandatory minimum prison sentences for those who commit murder.

This is being pursued in Parliament through amendments to three companion bills- the Criminal Justice Administration Act, the Offences Against the Person Act, and the Child Care and Protection Act.

Dr Walcott, speaking Sunday on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap, said some children will likely make poor decisions, including committing serious crimes as their brains are not fully developed until about age 25.

He said policy makers should therefore take into consideration the stage of a child's development and capacity to understand the nature of the acts  committed.

In a similar vein, attorney-at-law Nicole Gordon wants to see a different approach being adopted in response to children who break the law.
