Despite his recent conviction in the United States, the tax authorities
are going after outstanding monies owed by Jamaican drug kingpin Leebert
Ramcharan.
Ramcharan was convicted of drug trafficking earlier this month by US prosecutors.
He is facing life imprisonment.
But Tuesday officials of the tax department told the Tax Court that the Montego Bay businessman owes the government $64 million and they want the money.
His attorney Harold Brady alluded to his client's plight in the US, but says he is now in talks with the tax department on a possible settlement.
Mr. Brady requested another 30 days to have dialogue with his client on his tax problems.
The matter is to return to court on April 22.
Ramcharan, who was tagged a drug kingpin by US President George Bush, was extradited last year to the United States.
